CHRISTCHURCH AND EAST DORSET COUNCILS -APPOINTMENT OF INDEPENDENT PERSONS
The Christchurch Borough Council and the East Dorset District Council are required by the Localism Act 2011 to appoint at least one Independent Person to assist them in promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct by councillors and co-opted members of the Councils, and by any Town or Parish Councillors within their areas.
In particular, the views of the Independent Person are to be sought by the Councils before they make decisions, on an allegation that they have decided to investigate, as to whether a councillor has breached the Councillors Code of Conduct. The Independent Person's views may also be sought by the person complained against. For that reason, it is the intention of the Councils each to appoint at least two Independent Persons. The Independent Person(s) may also be consulted by the councils on other 'standards of conduct' matters including dismissal of any statutory officer.
Each of the Councils will provide information about any travel and subsistence costs that are available for the Independent Person(s). In addition to being called upon to give a view on matters which have been investigated, it is possible that the Independent Person(s) may be invited to attend meetings of the Councils' Ethical Governance Committee.
To obtain further details and an application form in relation to the position at either of the Council's listed above please contact Keith Mallett, Monitoring Officer at East Dorset District Council, either on 01202 795004 or by email to kmallett@christchurchandeastdorset.gov.uk or by writing to him at East Dorset District Council, Council Offices, Furzehill, Wimborne, Dorset BH21 4HN indicating which council you are interested in.
The closing date for applications is 13 June 2015. Details of interview dates will be provided by the Monitoring Officer for the relevant council.
