LYTCHETT Minster and Upton Town Council has appointed its first Mayor, Cllr June Richards.
The second largest town within Purbeck District decided to use the term mayor instead of chairman for the head of the council, joining both Swanage and Wareham.
However members made a conscious decision not to spend tax payer's money on the regalia and pomp which can surround the activities of a town mayor.
Ermine robes, tri-corn hats and ornate regalia can run into many thousands of pounds which members felt was not appropriate for the tax payer to fund.
But they did feel that the term mayor carried more kudos, not just within the town but outside, and would promote a stronger image of the town.
“I am thrilled once again to be elected to lead this council and warmly welcome the new title,” said Cllr Richards.
“Residents can be assured that as chairman or mayor my team and I will continue to work diligently to serve and improve the lives of the people of Lytchett Minster and Upton.”
The town has achieved Quality Town Council status, the only town in Purbeck and one of only seven in Dorset to have achieved this standard.
