Bournemouth regain the top spot in the Championship after a frustrating afternoon. The Cherries were held to a draw by Huddersfield at the Goldsands despite dominating much of the game.

Despite managing 20 shots (to Huddersfield’s 8) AFC Bournemouth managed to convert just once. This was in part due to a fine performance from Alex Smithies, the Huddersfield goal keeper. Neither team had any clear cut opportunities to win the game. However late pressure from Bournemouth gave Cherries fans hope that they could have stolen all 3 points towards the end.

A slow start to the game saw the first chance come in the 12th minute when Matt Ritchie forced a save from Alex Smithies.

16 minutes in Bournemouth won a corner. Matt Ritchie pulled off a training ground routine, with a low driven corner to Yann Kermorgant who slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the Huddersfield goal.

The Terriers almost levelled the scoring after 23 minutes when Tommy Smith was denied by Artur Boruc.

Smithies delivers the goods again in the 28th minute denying Matt Ritchie. Callum Wilson could not find the target with the follow up.

The second half also started slowly. The first real chance resulting in a goal for the visiting side. Vaughan slotted past Boruc to give the equaliser.

Bournemouth almost instantly replied, but for a fine save by Huddersfield’s star player Smithies.

A Bournemouth corner in the 80th minute saw a scrap just in front of goal, the chance was somehow cleared to seal the point to travelling team.

Man of the Match

My man of the match this week has to be Alex Smithies who kept Huddersfield in the game with an impressive 6 saves. Without such a performance AFC Bournemouth could have won by a 2 or 3 goal margin.

Summary

A draw is a harsh result for The Cherries as they had enough chances to win the game. An inspired performance from the Huddersfield goal keeper was enough for The Terriers to take a point back home with them.
