There is only one day a year that it is normal to find yourself queuing in your local supermarket with the male Spice Girls, a flock of flamingos and a clown – SUBU Summer Ball.
After stocking up on essentials, it was time to let the end of year celebrations commence. One-by-one guests began to arrive at our house, armed with drinks, snacks and an eclectic variety of props. For some, costumes were in discussion for months, for others it was the last minute morning scramble at the fancy dress shop. Either way, being graced by the presence of the I’m A Celeb cast, Scooby Do gang, a cowboy and an Indian, was an unforgettable start to the day.
As the drinks began to flow, so did the selfie taking and hundreds of snaps later it was time to make our way to the buses. As ever, the journey was not like the normal university bus experience. As soon as I stepped on board the chanting began, most of the shouting paid homage to AFC Bournemouth’s heroic promotion to the Premier League. The good vibes radiated through the bus with everyone complimenting each other on their costumes as well as laughing together at drivers’ confused reactions.
Nothing quite beat the sheer excitement of walking through the gate. With music blasting out from the Nerve tent I couldn’t help but start skipping around the site. Checking out everything the site had to offer took longer than expected, everywhere I turned there were society friends, course pals and housemates, some of which took me a lot longer to recognise than others. I felt no worries about losing anyone, as there were always other people I knew around the corner. It was also a great place to make new friends. With an abundance of portaloo queue acquaintances and a game of piggy in the middle with complete strangers under my belt it was time to get my groove on.
I made my way to the Urban tent just in time to catch J-Fresh who got the crowd completely pumped ahead of Garage legend Artful Dodger. It was impossible not to jump and dance the whole way through his set.
The intense calorie burn meant one thing was needed - food. There was an abundance of choice; I chose to stick with a stodgy burger, which I definitely credit for helping me to avoid a nasty snakebite hangover.
Maybe not my wisest idea was following the burger with a fairground ride, although the long queue gave my stomach some time to settle, I still didn’t feel my best after spinning around like a washing machine.
After a sit down to recover, it was time to hit the main stage. After replacing M.O at the last minute, Angel had not problems in winning the crowd over with everyone joining in for a sing of his top-ten hit ‘Wonderful’. In comparison, Sunset Sons brought a totally different vibe to the main tent and they will definitely be providing me with the perfect soundtrack beach days this summer.
The tent was rammed with people eagerly anticipating this year’s headline act – Sigma – and the drum and bass duo did not disappoint. They had every single person dancing and I am sure that their set will be remembered as one of the greatest Summer Ball sets in recent times.
The bus back was a lot quieter than the journey there and I couldn’t help but doze off. Summer Ball 2015 was definitely the highlight of my university year – I just hope that next year I can make it to the legendary survivors photo!
