Here are my festive wine recommendations to accompany your gourmet specialities.
Christmas morning in our household always starts with the finest Scottish smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. There really is only one drink that will hit the proverbial bulls-eye and that is Champagne. We have a delightful “boutique” Champagne from the heart of Reims, Baron Albert £21.50 a bottle. Served on its own it is delicious but can be taken to another level with a dash of our wonderful Fox Denton Sloe Gin £20.
As people assemble in the kitchen to nibble on canapes a little more fizz is called for. The amazing sparkling wines of English Oak from Lytchett Matravers is my recommendation either the white Engelman or the rose, Chinkapin both £29.
If you are planning on serving a fish course or indeed some shellfish of some description then look no further than our fabulous St Paul Colline, Picpoul, £9.70 from Southern France. This wine accompanies fish brilliantly with its clean crisp, citrus finish, C’est maqnifique as the French would say.
If it’s turkey, goose, a rib of beef or a nut roast, I think a delicious red is what I would recommend. Peppoli, £16.70 is a fabulous Tuscan wine made by the world renowned Antinori family. Full of lots of delicious red berry fruit and a long, lingering after taste.
Lastly, to finish, if you are going traditional with Christmas pudding or something more exotic then a lovely dessert wine or “stickie” as we say in the trade is an essential way to end this feast. Hungary is famous for its specialist dessert wine, Tokaji. Sauska Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos, £24.50. Will definitely hit the right notes.
Have a wonderful Christmas and a joyful New Year.
