AS England prepares to take on Germany in the Round-of-16 match of the Euro 2020 tournament tomorrow, the Echo looks back at some of the clashes between the two teams in the past.
Stanley Matthews scored in a 6-3 win for England in Germany in 1938. Matthews went on to become the first player to be awarded the Ballon d'Or and the only player to have been knighted while still playing football.
England then lifted the World Cup in 1966 at Wembley with Geoff Hurst scoring a hat-trick and Martin Peters also on target in a 4-2 win after extra-time.
Germany got their revenge on England by beating them after extra-time in the quarter-finals of the 1972 World Cup.
England’s Bryan Robson had the best opportunity of the match when he headed goalwards during the 1982 World Cup in Spain. The match ended 0-0 and England failed to make it out of the group stage.
Gary Lineker scored England’s equaliser in their World Cup semi-final with Germany at the 1990 World Cup. It was heartbreak for England though as they were beaten by Germany on penalties.
More misery for England followed at Euro 96 as Germany once again came out on top in a shoot-out in the semi-final at Wembley.
England finally got the better of Germany at a major tournament in the 2000 European Championships. Alan Shearer scored the only goal as England prevailed in their group clash.
England’s 1-0 home defeat to Germany in 2000 at a sodden Wembley – the last to be played at the old venue – resulted in the resignation of Kevin Keegan as manager.
The night no Englishman will ever forget came on September 1, 2001, when Sven Goran Eriksson’s side ran riot in Munich. Steven Gerrard fired England in front just before half-time and striker Michael Owen celebrated a hat-trick in the second half. Emile Heskey put the icing on the cake with a fifth goal.
More controversy marred the fixture in 2010 when Frank Lampard’s ‘goal’ was ruled out as England crashed out of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa during the Round-of 16 match. The match finished 4-1.
A moment to be savoured came in March 2016 when Roy Hodgson’s side came from two goals down to prevail 3-2 courtesy of Eric Dier’s stoppage-time header.
Gareth Southgate suffered his first defeat in charge of England in March 2017 when Lukas Podolski’s second-half winner ensured Germany a 1-0 win during a friendly match in Dortmund
The nation hopes Southgate and his men will enact overdue revenge at Wembley tomorrow.
