A TRADITIONAL community pub “brought back to life” following a major renovation - The Railway Christchurch is your Pub of the Week.
During back to 1856, the popular watering hole on Stour Road was formerly a hotel for the railway workers until the mid-1900s.
The pub was extended in the 1970s with a kitchen added and further seating space to the lounge bar.

Greenfield Events bought the lease in September 2020 and since then have looked to harness the pub’s history and restoring its reputation as a good quality British honest pub.
Austyn Greenfield said: “We are a traditional two bar pub, with both a public and lounge bar, and we are proud to say we are the only pub in Christchurch with separate bars.
“We provide top quality cask ales and in November 2021 we won an award with the Southwest Ale Society.
“We offer a traditional community pub with a variety of events for all ages. We offer a fantastic food menu, serving the award winning Pieminister Pies seven days a week which are extremely popular with both current and new customers.”
During the lockdown period in April 2021, The Railway pub strived to support locally owned and run businesses during those difficult months.
Greenfield Events used the time that they were closed to take on a major refurbishment job to its interior and exterior which has gone down well with existing and new customers.
“We underwent a major refurbishment of the two bars and outside garden which now has a capacity of over 120 people,” said Austyn.
“We had a full refurbishment both inside and outside with all our bars being fully rebuilt and brought back to life.
“During the summer months we provide a large tapas, pizza and charcoal grill menu for our customers to enjoy in our beautiful beer garden.”
The pub hosts numerous events and themed nights during the week, including a quiz night, open mic night and their folk and roots nights, which, after running for almost a decade, continues to draw in crowds of people.
Austyn added: “One of our most popular nights a month is our Folk and Roots night. The folk and roots night has been going for nearly 10 years now in Christchurch and we are now very proud to have been chosen by them to be their official hosts.
“We host this evening every third Tuesday of the month and we welcome musicians from around the area and is absolutely completely free for all our customers.
“We are also planning an outside acoustic festival on the weekend of the May 13 to May 15 this year so watch this space.”
