DORSET captain Luke Webb is in confident mood ahead of his county’s top-of-the-table NCCA Trophy clash with Wales at Wimborne tomorrow (11am).
Webb’s men clattered Staffordshire by nine wickets at West Bromwich last weekend, moving them second in Group Four.
Dorset know a victory on home turf would cement their place in the quarter-finals, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the last eight.
Speaking to the Dorset Echo, Webb emphasised how much he is relishing the fixture with leaders Wales.
He said: “It’s good the way it’s turned out – the winner finishes top of the group.
“We’re looking forward to it and we’ve got all the momentum having won our last two.
“We’ll be looking to continue what we’ve done well over the last two weeks and finish on a high, which would see us through to the quarter-final.
“I’ve been saying to the boys that if we keep putting ourselves in these positions where you’re going into the latter stages of groups and knockout stages, then the next time you do it it’s going to be easier.
“You’ve got that experience and we’ve been to two finals days now, so in white-ball cricket we’re used to being in those pressure games.
“The challenge is to keep coming out on the right side of them. The incentive is there to win the group, so we’re really looking forward to it.
“It would be nice to get through to the knockout stage of another competition because once you get through, then all of a sudden you’re only two wins away from a final.”
Bashley all-rounder Harry Broderick (back) and Greg Willows (unavailable) are out but Sam Young and Brad Currie return.
Webb said: “Harry’s picked up an injury so he didn’t play much part for Bashley on Saturday and that ruled him out of Sunday.”
Commenting on last week’s win at Staffordshire, Webb added: “From ball one to when we hit the winning runs, we were dominant.
“I wouldn’t say it took us by surprise but I don’t think you go into any match – particularly against a county the size and pedigree of Staffordshire – expecting to be that dominant.
“It was a really nice surprise and something we’ve earned after playing well over a long period of time now.
“I wonder whether being an unknown team to Staffordshire might’ve been to our benefit. They’d have watched videos but not known much about our bowling attack.
“Rob (Pack, 5-18) in particular bowled fantastically at them and they didn’t really have any answers to him.
“Another message to the lads was just to be positive and knock this off as professionally as possible, improve on what we didn’t do that well against Buckinghamshire.
“And I couldn’t have got a better reaction. (Oli) Soames and (Jacob) Gordon just went off like a train and the game was killed within half an hour of us batting.”
Dorset: Soames, Gordon, Webb, Young, A Eckland, Scott, J Eckland, Woodruff, Pack, Breckon, B Currie. 12th man: Freak.
