A WEYMOUTH fish and chip shop has been judged among the top 10 in the UK.
Bennett's Fish and Chips on the harbourside came sixth on the list of the nation's favourites compiled by the Times and Sunday Times.
The best chippies were named alongside the newspapers' annual best beaches guide for Britain which named Weymouth as the best in the whole of the UK.
Established in 1989 Bennett’s Fish & Chips has carved out a name for itself among tourists and locals alike.
However, Bennett's just pipped another Weymouth favourite, The Marlboro on the Town Bridge, seemingly because it was easier to find.
The Times judge said: "There are more than 20 chippies in Weymouth yet locals recommend only two: Marlboro on St Thomas Street and Bennett’s on Trinity Road.
"All admit you couldn’t pass a hygienic hardwood chip fork between them in terms of quality, and that whichever you favour is a matter of personal preference alone.
"I chose Bennett’s solely because it’s the easier to find: a sky-blue takeaway and restaurant on the harbour.
" Also, the packaging is recyclable cardboard and, for nostalgics, they do a spam fritter for £2.40."
The chippie judged the best in Britain by The Times was Whitehead’s Fish & Chips, Hornsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
