Bournemouth golf event sees players score four hole in ones

So, when three players at a Bournemouth golf club achieved it in the same competition members struggled to believe it.

And if that was not enough sporting drama during The Open week, in the second day of the competition one of the players repeated the feat on the same hole with the same club.

The 2023 seniors club championship at Meyrick Park will go down in golfing folklore.

Clive Wingfield, 60, was having an “eclectic round” before the drama on the 152-yard par three 12th on Monday, July 17.

A nine on one of the early holes is never a sight golfers want to see but the property dealer certainly made up for it.

The left-hander’s slight fade took a perfect line and ended up nestled in the bottom of the cup.

Not content with his single ace, he found himself before the same hole two days later, pulled the five iron again and sent a sweet strike down towards the green.

Not even thinking he would come close again, the Talbot Woods resident began to pick up his tee before his playing partner could not believe what he had witnessed as he watched it drop.

“I’ve never had a hole in one before,” Clive said. “Two in one competition is just unbelievable but also for there to be four across the competition is amazing.”

Clive, who won the competition, received a round of applause from members at the end of his second round before buying them all a drink at the bar.

This included 75-year-old Matt Dooley who tucked in his hole in one on the 162-yard 10th on Monday.

The retired plumber “creamed” a five-rescue club on the par three to achieve his first ever ace.

Matt, who played in Clive’s group in the second round, said: “You get a buzz when you actually walk up to the hole and see the ball in there.

“It was quite an incredible feeling.”

The hole in one drama started on the intimidating first hole on Monday.

Measuring 220 yards, club records dating back to 2006 show it had not been conquered in a single shot.

That was until former professional boxer Austin Okoye pulled driver to record his second ever hole in one.

“It is the most impossible hole,” Austin said. “It is just remarkable.”

The karate instructor, who lives in Boscombe, added: “It is one of those holes I always dreamed of doing it one but never thought it was possible.

“When it happened it was a bit of shock.”
