CHANGES are proposed for a town centre nightclub ahead of its re-opening as Popworld.
The former Walkabout venue at 156-164 Old Christchurch Road is set to undergo a number of internal changes as part of its ‘re-brand’.
Self-described as a “late-night bar with a difference”, Popworld is expected to bring “cheese with style” when it opens its doors in September.
Owners have plans for infinity mirrors, projectors, and vibrant new signage – all of which have been requested in a planning application for the site.
They are looking to install four of the mirrors with LED light lines that create an ‘eternity mirror effect’.
The projectors will be used to project text onto the pavement outside the nightclub.
A heritage statement given as part of the application argued for the plans to be granted, reading: “The building is in a conservation area and has been occupied by Walkabout for a number of years.
“The client is changing the establishment to Popworld part of the same brand but a different concept.
“It is considered that all new replacement signage is suitable for the Conservation Area and is in keeping with the architectural heritage of the building and surrounding areas.”
A licensing application has also been submitted for internal alterations to the layout of the premises, and to officially change the name to Popworld.
This application clarifies that the permitted hours and licensable activities will remain the same as that of Walkabout.
The public consultation on the licensing application closes on Wednesday, August 3, while for the planning applications it ends on Thursday, August 11.
Walkabout has remained one of Bournemouth’s most popular venues for clubbers over decades.
Its ‘Snakebite Sunday’ event has never failed to attract crowds, with the cheap drinks being a hit for students in the town.
Revellers enjoyed one last night out the club’s farewell party on Saturday, July 22.
In a statement on social media, Walkabout said the closure was the “end of an era”, adding: “We'll be saying farewell to Walkabout Bournemouth before we reopen as Popworld Bournemouth in September with a closing party on July 22.”
Popworld has a chain of nightclubs with the closest ones in Southampton and Weymouth.
