POOLE Bridge will close for nearly two weeks as annual maintenance work is carried out.
BCP Council will close the lifting bridge at Poole Quay from Sunday, March 10 while workmen carry out checks on the historic bridge.
No vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists are able to cross, but boats can still pass through.
A diversion route will be in place via Twin Sails Bridge, which will remain open to traffic while the work is carried out on the other bridge.
Work on the bridge, which links Poole and Hamworthy, is expected to be completed on the evening of Friday, March 22.
Opened in 1927, Poole Bridge had a £4.7million refurbishment during its 90th year to ensure its usability for another 120 years.
Until 1837, the best way to get from one side of Poole Quay to the other was on a ferry pulled by a rope.
Every local family paid fourpence a year for that privilege, while strangers were charged a halfpenny for each crossing.
When the Twin Sails Bridge opened in 2012, it was an alternative route rather than a replacement.
