THE owner of a dog that killed a lamb has been ordered to pay a farmer £300.
Dorset Police Rural crime team was made aware of an incident of sheep worrying in Sturminster Newton.
A lamb was killed by a dog at a farm on March 29.
Shortly after the incident, the owner of the dog came forward to provide an account.
The police were able to deal with the dog’s owner out of court by way of conditional caution, and they were ordered to pay the victim farmer £300 to cover the loss suffered.
A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “On this occasion, the dog owner did the right thing by coming forward. Cases of worrying about sheep can carry a fine of up to £1000.
"Sheep are valuable assets to farmers, and any harm to them harms a farmer’s livelihood. Even if you don’t believe so, your dog can kill. Please remember to keep your dogs on a lead around livestock."
