Charminster Road in Bournemouth has a history that intertwines with the development of the Charminster district itself.

The area itself likely originated as a small cluster of cottages near the junction of present-day East Way and Charminster Road. The name “Charminster” might have come from an early resident who hailed from Charminster near Dorchester.

The first detailed census in 1841 reveals only a handful of families residing in Charminster. These were primarily working-class families involved in trades like bricklaying and farm work.

Bournemouth Echo:

The late 19th century saw significant development in Charminster. The Dean Park Estate’s expansion northward brought new residents and a more suburban character to the area. This growth likely extended to Charminster Road as well.
