POOLE QUAY was packed with on-lookers as a flotilla passed through the harbour to commemorate the D-DAY 80th anniversary.

The event on June 6 was led by local professional vessels followed by a lighting of the beacon.

The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Pete Miles, welcomed a round of applause while the beacon was lit before the flotilla returned for another show of appreciation.

The boats lined up in the harbour to bring an end to proceedings while the sun set.

Swanage Lifeboat station posted on social media that its all-weather lifeboat took part in the parade.

“Many RNLI volunteers were involved in the war effort including Swanage Lifeboat that attended 18 calls during the Second World War, many to crashed aircraft.”

RNLI Poole Lifeboat Station also shared: “What a special evening to be part of the D Day flotilla organised by Poole Harbour Commissioners.

“Both Poole lifeboats formed part of the flotilla alongside Swanage Lifeboat, Dorset Police boats, and other commercial craft and followed in the cross channel ferry the Barfleur.

“It was great to see so many people along the quay for this event.”
