A CHRISTCHURCH cinema which is "pure Art Deco" has been named among the very best in Britain, according to a new list.

The Regent Centre was featured alongside 19 others in an article from The Telegraph which was looking to find venues with "the best food, the quirkiest programming and the most beautiful settings".

The publication wrote: "The day that we run low on great places to watch films will truly be a sad one. But, it’s a way off.

"Hundreds of cinemas around the country are eager for this new footfall – some new, some as old as the hills. All have their bespoke charms and different programming philosophies.

"We’ve scoured Google Maps, heeded recommendations, and plucked 20 of the best."

What was said about The Regent Centre?

The Regent Centre was labelled the 'best multi-purpose venue' on the list and was praised for its Art Deco exterior, classically-styled interior and a surprising choice of programming.

The Telegraph wrote: "The Regent Centre, in the middle of Christchurch High Street, is more than a cinema: it’s also the town’s theatre, concert hall and exhibition space.

"Initially opened in 1931 as a picture palace, it went through a phase of being a bingo club in the 1970s, before volunteers restored it in 1983.

"The frontage is still pure Art Deco, despite the pesky branch of Subway immediately to its left.

"Inside, red and gold predominate, with the style of flip-down seating you’d expect, and programming that can surprise you – a 35mm print of Jaws 3-D (1983) for the summer, anyone?"

Reacting to being featured on the list The Regent Centre shared a statement on their Facebook page.

It wrote: "We're absolutely thrilled to have been named one of The Telegraph's '20 Best Cinemas in Britain' highlighting our eclectic programme and Art Deco features (sorry Subway, we love you really)."
