A BOURNEMOUTH teen has triumphed in an expedition known for its ‘rigorous challenges’.
Thomas Dowdeswell has completed a 19-day wild camping experience known as ‘The Pinnacle’ with charity Outward Bound.
The 16-year-old embarked on the journey in the Scottish Highlands, based out of Loch Eil near Fort William, alongside 11 other young adventurers.
Outward Bound is a provider of outdoor learning and leadership programs, and ‘The Pinnacle’ is its most challenging expedition, with fewer than 100 young people from around the world completing it each year.
Designed for those with previous outdoor experience, the course sees participants navigate through some of the remotest corners of the UK and conquer the tallest mountains in the British Isles, using essential outdoor skills such as navigation, camp craft, and mountaineering.
Reflecting on his journey, Thomas said: "This experience was amazing. Nineteen days wild camping is something I’d never thought I would do and will remain in my memory forever.
"The friendships I have made have been incredible and I hope to stay in contact with them for many years to come.”
James Tedham, an Outward Bound instructor who directed this year’s expedition, said: "Thomas and his peers embodied a spirit of adventure and resilience that the Pinnacle is all about.
"Watching these young people conquer their fears and grow in confidence was truly inspiring. They returned as a solid team with memories that will last a lifetime."
