THE STUDENT union at Bournemouth University have said it is “appalled” by recent riots and advises students to be vigilant.

SUBU full-time officers said in a statement that there is “no place for racist or Islamophobic violence” at the university following recent protests across the UK.

SUBU full-time officers: “We are appalled by and condemn the recent riots across the UK, and we want to express our sympathy and solidarity to all those affected.

“We are incredibly proud of our multicultural community at BU, and there is absolutely no place for racist and Islamophobic violence.

“We are aware that a protest motivated by the same hate has been planned in Bournemouth on Sunday, August 18.

“You have the right to be and feel safe in your local community whilst carrying out your daily activities, but we urge our students and staff to stay vigilant and take relevant precautions.

“As your students’ union, we acknowledge the critical role we must play in putting a stop to the rising hate.

“We are committed to actively working towards creating a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone.

“For those who have been affected by the violence taking place, our SUBU Advice team are here to listen and support you.

“They can also signpost you to other services available.

“Reach out to them or book an appointment with an advisor at subu.org.uk/advice.

“You can report a hate crime to the police by calling 101.

“Always remember to call 999 if it is an emergency.”
