EXTINCTION Rebellion flew kites at Hengistbury Head to protest the air festival

Protesters from the BCP branch carried out their planned ‘kites of peace’ in the two hours before the first flights at 2pm on Thursday, August 29.

The group of about 11 protesters described the noisy fighter jets as “triggering” for asylum seekers and “flying death machines”.

They added the show has a negative impact on the environment, due to the tonnes of C02 released into the air.

Dorset Police were aware of the protest and were in touch with the organisers before the demonstration to ensure it was “legally and safely without causing significant or ongoing disruption”.

The protesters held a banner up reading: “Bournemouth Air Show - 16 Years Fuelling Climate Crisis”.

It’s estimated that 110,000 litres of jet fuel is used in displays by participating aircraft at the Bournemouth Air Festival, creating approximately 275 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
