THREE events planned for Sunday across Dorset have been cancelled amid heavy rainfall.

Bournemouth and Poole Preservation Club’s Classic and Steam Vehicle Show, due to raise money for Swanage Railway at Harman’s Cross, has been cancelled on Sunday, September 8.

Organisers have said the heavy rain overnight has meant the event has had to be axed at the last minute.

A spokesman for the event said: “Unfortunately, due to incoming bad weather over night and forecasted for Sunday we have made the very sad decision to cancel Sunday's show.

“We are still open and running today (Saturday) so please do come along and show your support.”

And Classic Cars on the Quay at the Quomps in Christchurch has been cancelled for Sunday, September 8.

A spokesman said that due to the “saturated” ground on the Quomps, the organisers unanimously elected to cancel it.

He said: “No decision to cancel is taken lightly but with the amount of rain we have had and forecast for more the team felt we had absolutely no choice to give you the news as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, this Sunday’s Poole Stadium car boot sale has also been ditched at the last minute due to the weather.

The team said it will return next Sunday, September 14.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Whilst there remains some uncertainty with exact details, areas of heavy and at times thundery rain are expected to spread north, then west, across England and Wales from this evening and overnight.

"These areas of heavy rain may become more persistent across western areas during Sunday daytime whilst slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop further east.”

The spokesperson added some places could see less than 10mm of rainfall, while others could see as much as 40 to 60mm of rain.
