A CHRISTCHURCH baker is wowing the judges on popular TV show, The Great British Bake Off, as she stays another week.
Nelly Ghaffar, 44, was seen to be impressing the Channel 4 judges, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, during bread week on the season’s third episode.
The Dorset resident is a palliative care assistant for Marie Curie and likes to include her Slovakian culture in her bakes, as well as her husband’s Pakistani heritage.
For the first challenge, bakers were asked to create 12 savoury buns, with Nelly choosing to mix her two cultures.
She made a Slovakian dough with a Pakistani styled vegetable curry filling.
For the technical challenge contestants had to create a seven-strand plaited wreath but were given no instruction on shaping, so were given a demonstration by Paul.
Nelly was praised by the judges and came first in the technical challenge, prompting tears.
She said the comments made by Paul were the ‘biggest compliment she could have had’.
For the final challenge bakers were asked to make a cornucopia consisting of two different breads.
Nelly’s potato and onion bread horn was a hit along with her poppy seed and orange samosas and walnut and sweet cream cheese buns.
Both Paul and Prue said the breads were delicious, with the former adding they were ‘amazing and incredible’.
Nelly has gone on to the next round of bakes, although narrowly missing out on star baker.
