NEARLY 10 acres of land in Poole has been put on the market.

The land off Yarmouth Road, Branksome, is next to electrical company SSE’s Poole depot and Branksome business park.

Formerly home to Southern Gas Network (SGN), the empty land used to house an enormous gas holder before it was dismantled in 2019.

The existing and outgoing Poole local plan says the land will be used as a mixed-use site for employment and a 60-bedroom care home.

Most of the site lies within 400 metres of heathland, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Bristol-based BNP Paribas Real Estate Advisory and Property Management, marketing the land, said there is a freehold development opportunity fore the 9.49 acres.

The firm said: “Both unconditional and conditional offers for the freehold of property with limited title guarantee will be considered, though the sellers preference is for unconditional offers.

“Details on the requirements for offers will be released to interested parties prior to the offer deadline. All offers should confirm that the sellers non-negotiable environmental provisions are accepted.

“We are advised the site benefits from mains power, gas, water and drainage.”

On March 27, 1941, the staff canteen at the Bourne Valley Gas Works was hit by a German bomber and 33 gas workers were killed in the tragedy.

It is believed the bombers were targeting the railway viaducts.

Bronze plaques bearing the casualty's names are installed inside St Aldhelm's Church in Branksome.
