PARKING has been restricted near the site of a landslip in Bournemouth.

Motorists are now unable to park on the southern stretch of St Michael's Road near the top of West Cliff.

Access to a footpath in this area has also been restricted.

BCP Council said these measures will ‘ease the weight load immediately above the landslide site’.

As reported, two slips occurred west of Bournemouth Pier on October 9 and 19.

The most recent, believed to have been caused by heavy rainfall, nearly struck a dog walker and left multiple beach huts strewn across the promenade.

A large cordon was put in place at the base of the cliff as site assessments commenced.

Giving an update on Monday, Councillor Richard Herrett, portfolio holder for destination, leisure and commercial operations at BCP Council, said: “In the interests of public safety, following the cliff slip at West Cliff last week, our teams are taking several precautionary measures whilst careful assessments of the area continue.

“These measures include leaving the debris from the original slip in place at the base of the cliff to help prevent potential further movement.

“To ease the weight load immediately above the site, and to provide space for further investigations and surveys, a temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO) has been implemented along St Michael’s Road which suspends parking on the southern stretch closest to the cliff edge.

“Fencing is also in place to restrict access to the footpath in this location.

“The road remains open and disabled parking bays have been relocated to the north-west section of road.”

BCP Council said the actions taken will “ensure that the site remains as stable as possible as surveys continue”.

Cllr Herrett added: “We ask the public to follow the signage and be mindful of the precautions now in place in this area.”

Worried walkers spoke with the Daily Echo following the latest slide along the coast.

Georgina Humphries, visiting from Banbury, said it was “so scary for the poor bloke” who was nearly struck.

She added: “We’ve had so much rain lately, it was only a matter of time. You’ve got to feel for those with beach huts – they cost a fortune.”
