MARK Baseby has confirmed he intends to undergo an X-ray on his swollen right hand to see if he has broken any bones.
The Buccaneers rider, whom it was first thought had sustained a suspected broken hand in a nasty tumble at Isle of Wight on Tuesday, does not believe that is the case.
But doctors advised him to have an X-ray when the swelling goes down around his wrist and thumb area.
Baseby, whose side were well beaten 60-32 by the Islanders, said: “I’ll have to get an X-ray.
“The swelling is all over my wrist and down my thumb.
“My chain came off, threw me forward and I went over the handlebars, landing face first before falling on my hand.”
Baseby, who had just blasted outside Nick Simmons and Lee Smethills in separate manoeuvres to lead race six going into the final lap, added: “I’ve had a problem with my hand since (I fell off) at Mildenhall.
“It’s one of those niggling injuries that take time to heal, so you just try to ride through it.
“It’s a shame really because I was feeling good.
“In my first race before I fell, I had just gained on Ben Hopwood to pass him (for first) and I think I would have done.
“I had done all the hard work. But unfortunately the chain snapped.
“I borrowed one off Kyle Howarth for my second race and it was the same again, it snapped.
“Usually, I only have one a season go, I’ve never had two go in the same year before. I can’t believe my bad luck.”
On a different night, Baseby might have gleaned six points from those two outings, and gone on to plunder double figures against the Islanders.
He said: “To be fair, I was making good starts, but just messing it up on the first corner, the same as I did at Poole in my last meeting there.
“I have a good engine, which is working very well. I’m still getting used to it because it’s so fast.
“I’m meant to be riding in a grasstrack meeting on Sunday but I don’t know what will happen.
“I don’t think I could hold a pint of water at the moment, let alone a bike doing 60 miles per hour.
“The Buccaneers have got Dudley at home in the league on Wednesday and I want to be fit for that, but we’ll just have to see how it goes.”
