BUCCANEERS needed a last-heat 5-1 victory from Jay Herne and Mark Baseby to maintain their two-year winning run at Wimborne Road with a thrilling 47-43 triumph over King’s Lynn today.
Young Stars had pulled back a six-point deficit to go into the race level at 42-42.
And, with James Brundle having been forced to withdraw from the meeting with a head injury sustained in a heat nine fall, they were aiming to become the first side to beat Bournemouth Castle Cover at home since the side’s formation at the beginning of 2009.
But Herne, making his comeback for the club following a back injury, jumped out in front to lead Darren Mallett down the back straight.
Then Mark Baseby forced Mallett wide on the fourth turn of the second circuit to join Herne out front.
Their 5-1 confirmed Buccaneers’ four-point victory as Adam Lowe trailed in last, although the match point King’s Lynn secured lifted them off bottom spot and above Weymouth in the National League table.
