Following a mass departure for the Conservative Party last night (June 5), resignations have continued into this morning as PPS to the Department of Transport, Laura Trott has stepped down.
Writing on a Facebook post this morning, she urged that trust in politics must be of “the utmost importance.”
She said: “I want to update you all, that I have resigned from my role as Parliamentary Private Secretary, to the Department of Transport.
“Trust in politics is - and must always be - of the upmost importance, but sadly in recent months this has been lost.
“Thank you to all of you who have written to me expressing your views. I have read them carefully, and taken them into consideration as part of my decision.
“I have, and will always, put the residents of Sevenoaks and Swanley front and centre of my work in Westminster.”
This follows a loss of government officials last night, as both Health Secretary Savid Javid and Chancellor Rishi Sunak resigned from their positions among others.
These resignations come as Boris Johnson has been forced into a humiliating apology over his handling of the Chris Pincher row after it emerged he had forgotten about being told of previous allegations of “inappropriate” conduct.
Mr Pincher quit as deputy chief whip last week following claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club, but Mr Johnson was told about allegations against him as far back as 2019.
Boris Johnson admitted “it was a mistake” to give scandal-hit former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher his government role and said: “I apologise for it.”
