Comedian Harry Hill left many viewers 'freaked out' after an unsettling interview alongside a ventriloquist doll on BBC Breakfast yesterday morning.

The interview, which saw the former TV Burp host talk about his new live comedy show, took an unusual turn after he appeared on the guest sofa next to a ventriloquist puppet.

The show's host, Victoria Fritz, noted that the doll was "creepy" during the interview.

The puppet, named Gary, was dressed in an oversized green knitted vest as well as a brown undershirt.

Harry joked that Gary, who appears in Harry's first live tour in ten years, was taking over his comedy career.

In the interview, Harry admitted that "I am not a trained ventriloquist Victoria but it's been a lot of fun and Gary does some of his jokes" in the new stand-up show.

The 58-year-old comedian added that in the new show: "I thought I should just be silly, so I am just a bit silly for two hours. Anyone coming to the show and expecting an exposé or an in-depth look at the political scene won't get that I am afraid.

"There is a bit of rolling around on the floor with a long sock on as well as a baby elephant."

The comic went on to say that being a comedian is much like being an athlete.

Victoria soon commented that the puppet was "creepy" before asking Harry his views on the MPs running in yesterday's Conservative leadership race to become Prime Minister.

Harry replied: "I allocate people into two groups tray-bakes or tears-and-shares."

A bemused Victoria was left almost speechless as she responded: "Ok."

Viewers were quick to take to social media to express their unease at Gary's inclusion on yesterday's edition of BBC Breakfast as well as their annoyance at the interview itself.

One Twitter user said: "WTF are #bbcbreakfast doing right now?"

Another said: "Please end interview with Harry Hill, it’s painful @BBCBreakfast."

However, users defended the bit, saying: "Harry Hill is subtly one of the funniest comedians in the UK" while another added: "He nailed it then!! If you don’t love Harry Hill, you’re dead inside. Brilliantly clever."
