DORSET captain Luke Webb is relishing the “new challenge” of facing Staffordshire in the NCCA Trophy at West Bromwich tomorrow (11am).

Webb’s men rarely face the Midlands team and the clash takes place in the context of a wide-open Group Four with just two points separating leaders Wiltshire from Staffs in fifth and last.

Dorset beat Buckinghamshire on the home soil of Dorchester last time out and Webb is looking to continue the momentum from that victory.

He told Echosport: “It’s odd, everyone seems to be beating everyone. I don’t think there’s one team running away with it, which is good for the competition.

“It shows how competitive it is and how all the teams are of a similar good standard.

“Staffs are bottom but they’ve got the same amount of points as four of the teams, so I don’t think you can look at the table and read too much at the moment.

“Everyone’s in the same position, so after week three it’s going to set it up for week four quite nicely.

“All five teams seem to be really good and I know Staffs will be really strong, seeing their side and a couple of their players. They will be a very good team.”

Webb added: “Not a team we come across often. I think I played against them once in a semi-final but it’s a really exciting challenge.

“Playing these teams we don’t play all the time gives you a new challenge.

“It’s quite nice sometimes because you go into the game without too many pre-judgements of players and you take it for what it is, which can be good.

“It’ll be exciting. We’re playing in Birmingham as well, we don’t play in that part of the country much either, so it should be good fun.”

Barring injuries, Dorset are set to make two changes to the 11 that began the victory at Dorchester.

Bath’s ex-England Under-19 opening batter Sam Young misses out, as does left-arm seamer Brad Currie.

Coming in to replace them are seamer David Scott and batter Greg Willows.
