HAMWORTHY United boss Dan Cann admitted discipline cost his side during an opening day defeat against to Willand Rovers.
Making their debut at the Bob Lucas Stadium, their temporary home with work at their County Ground base still to be completed, Hammers saw two players sent off as they started the season with a 2-0 loss.
Max Buckler, making his second debut for the club after re-joining this summer, saw red for the follow through on a full-blooded challenge, whilst Crit Clarke was adjudged to have struck a Willand player with a flailing arm for the second red card.
Willand also saw red, Ryan Guppy dismissed for two yellow cards.
Discussing the result, Cann told the Daily Echo: “Disappointing, I think.
“First half was actually quite positive and we made a lot of chances, should have taken a few of the chances.
“And we should have built on it and we just come out, second half - discipline is the thing that's let us down today.
“A couple of really quite rash decisions from a couple of experienced players that I would expect better from has let us down, really.
“Because even when it went 10 v 10, or 10 v 11, we were still in the game.
“That's when you've just got to show a bit of composure, especially, like I said, from experienced players.
“They need to know better for us to be able to sort of dig ourselves out of those situations that we get into.
“A lot of learnings for sure.”
Hammers’ home fixtures during pre-season were staged at the County Ground, meaning the Willand fixture was their first taste of their temporary home.
Cann restarted: “It's different surroundings, isn't it?
“So it is something to get used to.
“But it’s nice surroundings, it's a great ground.
“I said to the lads before the game that playing at grounds like this is what we aspire to as a club.
“We want to continue to grow and to continue to improve and get to those levels, but we need to learn and learn very quickly.”
“We're obviously into a game straight away on Tuesday, so a lot of the lads have just been saying it's a good opportunity for us to put it right, which is good.
“But, like I said, we need to learn quickly and right the wrongs from the second half today.”
