SCOTT Mitchell’s hopes of a first ever meeting with Phil Taylor were dashed, as the Dorset star was beaten in the first round of the World Seniors Matchplay.
Mitchell knew victory over Paul Hogan would set up a mouthwatering clash against either legend Taylor or three-time world champion John Part in the quarter-finals.
Taylor went on to defeat Part 9-7, but Mitchell had earlier in the day been edged out 8-6 by Hogan.
Trailing 4-2 from the break in the high-quality contest, Scotty Dog battled back but missed chances at double to level up the contest at 7-7.
Hogan eventually fell over the line, nervily cleaning up a checkout of 10 on double two to end Mitchell’s hopes at the York Barbican.
Mitchell returns to county action with Dorset away at Lancashire next weekend.
