JONATHAN Cornish smashed the men’s course record as the Wimborne 10 Mile Road Race celebrated its 25th anniversary.
Cornish, of Hercules Wimbledon, roared him in a time of 50.34, beating the previous record set in 2007 by over a minute.
This was despite the course being covered in surface water at the six-mile mark.
His efforts earned him a £500 prize.
A little way behind in second place was Daniel Mulryan of Thames Valley Harriers (52.17) and the third man home in a field of 277 was City of Salisbury’s Jaymee Domoney (52.45).
In the women’s race Gill Pearson of the Running for Time Club won in a time of 1.03.13.
She was followed by Molly Roach of Dorset Doddlers (1.03.30) and Louise Mills (1.04.01) in third.
One lucky runner won a shoe voucher for £250 for being the 10,000th runner to have completed the course since the race's inception.
But the principal beneficiary will be the charity Friends of Wimborne Hospital.
