WIMBORNE Town boss Tim Sills described his side’s weekend as one to forget after the abandonment of their fixture away at Larkhall Athletic after Jez Bedford required medical attention.
Magpies were trailing 3-1 in stoppage time as Bedford went to challenge goalkeeper Arthur Nasta for a high ball, the resultant collision leaving the midfielder on the floor.
After a lengthy wait for an ambulance, Bedford was taken to a nearby hospital, before being discharged and visiting one closer to home.
Tests have since shown that the former Portsmouth midfielder suffered a lacerated kidney, and stayed in hospital overnight on Monday.
Speaking of the match and the incident, Sills told the Daily Echo: “It was scary for a little while there, but thankfully but Billy (Coleman) our physio and Chelsie (Hextall) their physio were all over it, they looked after him.
“Obviously they were slightly disappointed that it got abandoned so late in the game. I understand that to a certain extent, but it was all about player welfare making sure he was in the best place.
“We gave him the best care that we possibly could.
“The game itself was, was disappointing for us.
“An actually horrendous surface to play on, which we just didn't get to grips with at all and got punished twice in the first 20 minutes.
“Never really got back into it as we would have liked to have done. So it was an all-round day to forget.”
At the time of writing, it has not been decided whether the result will stand, or if the match will be ordered to be replayed.
Despite the current limbo over the fixture, Wimborne remain top of the Southern League Division One South, level on points with second-placed Cribbs.
“Ultimately there's a long, long part of the season still to come,” continued Sills when asked if remaining top was a small positive to take from the weekend.
“Even at this stage, it's in our hands. Whatever happens, whether it gets abandoned, whether the result stands, or whether we have to replay it.
“It's a positive that we've managed to put ourselves in that position with our form over the last sort six to eight weeks.
“Saturday's a bit of a reset in terms of us knowing that we've got to go to places like Larkhall where, you literally can't play football on it.
“We know we've got to adjust, and probably adjust a bit quicker than we did.
“So it's a good wake-up call as well, but nice still to be sitting at the top.”
