WIMBORNE Town boss Tim Sills believes the Southern League Division One South is a “stronger league than people give it credit for” as his Magpies continued their title push with a 2-0 win away at Paulton Rovers.
Harry Morgan’s early strike in the first half was built upon by substitute Cam Munn in the second period, with Wimborne moving back into first atop the league table.
Postponements and abandonments had made the top of the division hard to discern with sides enjoying multiple games in hand, but in recent weeks the league table has properly taken shape.
Whilst in first, Magpies are level on 42 points with Frome Town, albeit having played one game fewer than their title rivals.
After 20 matches, Cribbs are a point behind Magpies, whilst fourth-placed Bideford a six-points off first.
Asked about the promotion picture, Sills told the Daily Echo: “There's going to be teams that go on good runs.
“You might get a team that has a bit of a poor run as well.
“But it's just about maintaining that consistency. And it looks like the top four at the moment are the ones that have broken away a little bit.
“Although, there's nothing to say the others can't drag themselves back into that.
“We know it's going to be a tough fight to get promotion this year.
“We knew that all along.
“It is a stronger league than people give it credit for at times.
“Look at the teams that have gone up. Sholing, holding their own with one of the smaller budgets in that league, Totton flying in that league.
“There's not a lot of difference. So we'll definitely not take our eye off the ball and just make sure that we take each week as it comes, as they say, and try and get the job done each Saturday or Tuesday that we play.”
Discussing the victory at Paulton Rovers, Sills continued: “Away days are always tricky ones because you have to deal with slightly tricky pitches at times.
“(At Paulton) I thought the pitch was okay - it was very bobbly, but a lot better than some of the stuff we've played on recently.
“So it was just about applying ourselves, making sure decisions were right in the right areas, doing the horrible stuff, then relying on the fact that we'd produce enough moments of quality to hurt them at the other end.
“It was a very professional performance in the end.”
