WIMBORNE Town returned to the top of the Southern League Division One South after less than 24 hours off the summit with a comfortable 2-0 win away at Yate.
Frome’s Friday night win over Westbury United had briefly seen the Robins leapfrog Magpies, but two goals in two minutes from Jack Lovell and Matty Burrows saw Wimborne return to top spot.
Both sides entered the contest in fine form, with the hosts Yate riding high on a 10-game unbeaten streak that had catapulted them into the play-off picture.
The opening 15 minutes were a cagey affair as the two sides looked to work each other out.
Wimborne’s breakthrough would come shortly after the half-hour mark.
Lovell leapt highest to turn home Matty Neale’s free kick and open scores.
Minutes later, it would be two.
Goalscorer turned provider as Lovell fashioned in a chance for Burrows to go one-on-one with Yate’s Aaron Sainsbury.
The winger kept his cool, lofting the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper and doubling his side’s advantage.
Magpies were in control for the rest of proceedings, securing a vital three points to maintain their title charge.
Magpies: Flitney; Hanger, Walker, Jackson, Scorey; Burrows, Munn (Hoey, 90+1), Morgan, Neale (Carmichael, 65), Beale; Lovell (Baker, 81).
Unused subs: Griffin, Pike.
