WIMBORNE Town have successfully appealed the red card shown to winger Sam Griffin in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Paulton Rovers.
With scores pegged at 1-1 in the first half, Magpies were reduced to 10 men after referee Calum McFarlane deemed Griffin’s tackle on Christopher Peck as reckless.
In reality, the former Hamworthy United man had slipped into the challenge, with Wimborne proving their case with the assistance of video footage.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Magpies went on to beat struggling Paulton thanks to Connor Cocklin’s late goal.
Initially handed a three-match suspension, Griffin would have missed the top-of-the-table clash with Frome Town, as well as a big chunk of Wimborne’s run-in.
However, rather than serve the ban, Griffin is now available for selection on Saturday, when Magpies visit Willand Rovers in the Southern League Division One South (3pm).
In the reverse fixture at New Cuthbury Magpies ran out 4-2 winners in November, with Jack Lovell grabbing a hat-trick.
Wimborne are currently second in their eighth-tier league, level on points and goal difference with league leaders Frome Town.
Magpies also enjoy a game in hand over their nearest contenders, Frome on top of the division courtesy of having scored a goal more.
Frome have the chance to strengthen their grasp on top spot before Wimborne’s game at the weekend, with the Somerset outfit in action at home to Bishop’s Cleeve tomorrow.
The title rivals face each other in the penultimate weekend of the league campaign, with Wimborne set to host the Robins on Saturday, April 20.
With five games remaining, Wimborne have 69 points from 31 fixtures.
Magpies are currently on an 11-game unbeaten streak in the league, their last defeat now dating back to the end of January.
In contrast, upcoming opponents Willand have just one win in their last seven.
