WIMBORNE Town kept up their title charge, matching league leaders Frome Town’s result to beat Willand Rovers 1-0 away from home.
Billy Walker’s goal in the second period was enough for Magpies to come away from Devon with all three points, leaving Wimborne level on points with Frome with four games remaining.
Also tied on goal difference, Frome continue to sit atop the Southern League Division One South by virtue of having scored one more goal than Magpies, who do enjoy a game in hand over their title rivals.
With Frome having played earlier, beating Bishop’s Cleeve 1-0 on Friday evening, Wimborne knew that a two-goal winning margin would lift them back to the summit of the division.
Aside from a nervy moment when Ross Flitney’s clearance was charged down and send goalwards, the keeper recovering well, Wimborne controlled first-half proceedings.
Midway through the opening period, Magpies would have their goal.
Walker was well situated to node home a Matty Neale corner and open scores.
Throughout the remainder of the game Wimborne had chances to stretch their lead further, but were unable to do so.
Magpies: Flitney, Hanger, Walker, Cocklin, Jackson, Scorey, Morgan, Neale, Beale (Griffin, 65), Lovell (Baker, 89), Stuttle (Bedford, 78).
Unused subs: Carmichael, Munn.
