WIMBORNE Town boss Tim Sills is backing his side to see out the job of lifting the Southern League Division One South title after missing out on the chance to do so with a 1-1 draw against Frome Town.
Knowing that victory over second-placed Frome would confirm first place, Magpies could only draw in front of a record New Cuthbury crowd of 2,703.
James Ollis’ opener was cancelled out by Harry Morgan’s 10th strike of the campaign, preserving Wimborne’s season-long unbeaten record at home.
Whilst victory for Frome would have still left Wimborne in charge of their own destiny, thanks to two-point cushion and a game in hand, Sills felt that the equaliser highlighted his side’s mentality.
The former Hamworthy United manager told the Daily Echo: “Not the result we wanted, but when you go 1-0 down, I think you probably accept it at that point.
“We didn't play at our best, but we haven't been beaten.
“It was always still going to be on our hands anyway, but this just means it's a bit more secure in our hands.
“It’s up to us to go and finish the job, but like I say, it could have been worse.”
After a first half filled with cautious long balls and high clearances, Wimborne started to take control of proceedings at the start of the second period.
But their strongest spell of the game did not lead to a goal, Frome instead taking the lead against the run of play.
“We started to look dangerous,” continued Sills.
“We're aware of the threat with set pieces that they have.
“Just one moment where we haven't dealt with it and we haven't done what we've done for the rest of the game, and you get punished.
“Then all of a sudden you're looking at a mountain to climb.
“As always, our mentality was never going to let them not climb that mountain.
“Eventually we got there.”
