POOLE Town have completed an audacious swoop to sign midfielder Jake McCarthy.
The 28-year-old has spent most of his time in recent years competing in the National League and National League South, with Weymouth and Havant & Waterlooville.
But Dolphins have managed to persuade McCarthy to drop down into the Southern League for the 2024-25 campaign.
Starting out at Cherries, McCarthy had a loan spell at Maidstone United, before joining Weymouth in 2017.
With the Terras he made 182 appearances, scoring 29 goals and captaining them to two promotions.
He moved on to Havant, again taking up the role of skipper, but was unable to prevent relegation last season.
Discussing his arrival, McCarthy said: “It’s something that has been in the pipeline for a while now.
“I’m just really thankful to get it over the line and I’m happy to be here.”
Boss Steve Tully added: “A massive signing for the football club.
“A real intent signing that shows we are not going to mess about this year.
“He’s proven at levels a lot higher, but to get him on board just shows what team we are going to be next season.”
Meanwhile, Poole have also added winger Antonio Diaz to their ranks.
The former Cherries youngster joins Dolphins after leaving Gosport Borough.
The 24-year-old also had spells previously with Dorset clubs Wimborne Town, Dorchester Town and Weymouth, before a spell at Bashley.
Upon signing, Diaz said: “A new start for everyone at the club and I’m happy to be a part of it.
“The aim is to push for promotion.”
The third new face is Jack Hoey.
The midfielder spent last season with Wimborne Town, having also played for Bashley, AFC Totton, Weymouth and Christchurch, as well as a spell in USA.
“It’s a big year and I want to play a lot of games again,” said Hoey.
“I had my injury, but I now feel really good, so let’s see where we can take it.”
Tully added: “Jack is a proven winner.
“He can play in numerous positions and covers a lot of areas for us.”
The trio follow Tyrique Clarke and Charlie Davis in signing for Poole this summer.
But there has been a departure, with Harvey Wright heading out the exit door.
After impressive displays in 2023-24, the former Hamworthy United man was offered a new contract, but has opted to leave BlackGold Stadium.
Dolphins said: “We would like to place on record our thanks to Harvey for his tireless effort and desire for the club last season and we wish him all the best for the future.”
