A GOAL from Cameron Munn proved enough for Wimborne Town to make a winning return to the Southern Premier Division.

Munn’s second-half strike secured a 1-0 win for the newly-promoted Magpies over Hanwell Town at New Cuthbury.

More than 500 fans turned out for the contest, but clear chances were at a premium during the physical early exchanges.

Hanwell put a lot of high balls into the Wimborne box, from free-kicks and long throws, but Tim Sills’s charges held firm.

Former AFC Bournemouth youngster Josh Carmichael had a couple of efforts at the other end as the first half ended goalless.

Things livened up after the restart.

Full-back Drew Eccott-Young cut inside before his shot was saved by goalkeeper Sam Beasant.

Matty Burrows then found the net, only to be denied by an offside flag.

At the other end, veteran goalkeeper Ross Flitney denied efforts from Chris Regis and Dwayne Duncan, before Wimborne found what proved to be the winning goal.

Sam Jackson headed forwards before joining the attack. He saw his shot saved, but Munn was on hand to prod home the rebound from close range.

Billy Walker made a goal-saving block on the line as Wimborne preserved their clean sheet, to get off to a perfect start.

In the same division, Poole Town also started off their season with a clean sheet.

Steve Tully’s side travelled to Bracknell Town and came away with a 0-0 draw.

Bracknell, who reached the play-offs in each of the past two seasons, almost fell behind early on as Jake McCarthy fired off target.

Toby Holmes then missed a good chance to put his side ahead, while Cameron Plain made a smart stop to deny Dan Roberts at the other end.

McCarthy had the clearest opening in the second half, his effort thwarted by an impressive save from goalkeeper Michael Eacott as the game ended all-square.
