HEADED goals in each half gave Wimborne Town all three points over Hungerford Town.

Tim Sills stayed with the same starting lineup that knocked Tiverton Town out of the FA Cup.

Hungerford had an identical league record as they visited Wimborne, and the game was full of life from the first whistle.

The steady rain gave the ball a zip across the turf, as Matt Neale had the first look at goal, stinging keeper Clarke’s hands from 20 yards.

The visitors had early chances too, with winger Bancroft firing wide, before he was denied an opening by a superb sliding tackle from Josh Carmichael.

After action-packed opening exchanges, Wimborne took the lead on nine minutes.

Harvey Wright found Jez Bedford wide on the right with a pinpoint diagonal, before the winger went past three defenders and his dinked cross was met in the middle by Will Fletcher.

He headed gleefully into the net from yard out to give Wimborne the lead.

With 15 minutes gone, another Bedford went past more defenders and set up Burrows, whose low shot from the edge of the box was saved low by the post.

Just one minute later Hungerford equalised.

Bancroft raced onto Berry-Hargreaves’ pass down the inside-left channel, and the winger made no mistake, finishing past the advancing Ross Flitney.

With the scores level, the game continued to be end-to-end, as Cam Munn headed another Bedford cross over the bar.

The final 20 minutes of the first half were scrappy, though, with fewer chances for either side, as they headed into the dry dressing rooms out of the constant rain.

The second half started brightly too, with chances at both ends, Flitney called into action to tip the ball over the bar after a cross on the right led to pin-ball in the box.

On the hour mark, Wimborne won a free kick on the edge of the D as Burrows was chopped down, with his effort from the set piece saved by a diving Clarke onto the cross bar.

Pressure from the Magpies was building and they retook the lead on 66 minutes.

Carmichael’s driven cross from wide on the right was headed home just inside the far post by Cam Munn on twelve yards.

It was Hungerford’s turn to put on the pressure in the final 20 minutes, but Wimborne remained resolute in defence.

The hosts continued to look for a third goal, too, with chances coming for both sides in the closing stages.

But neither side could find the back of the net as Wimborne secured all three points, as they rise to 10th in the table, besting a side that were just four points off the playoffs last season.
