WIMBORNE Town Reserves knocked Cobham Sports out of the Dorset Premier League Cup with a narrow 1-0 win.
Wimborne dominated the first period but were unable to find a breakthrough, with the decisive goal coming on 73 minutes from substitute Charlie Middleton.
The hosts started well, with Cobham receiving an early set back as Aldo Bertorelli suffered a dislocated shoulder in the third minute after a heavy challenge.
Wimborne controlled the pace of the game and Cobham keeper Deakin had to be at his best to deny an effort from distance after nine minutes.
A goal for the hosts was disallowed on 24 minutes after Deakin made another fantastic save, only for the ball to be put into the net from an offside position.
Cobham tried to get a foothold in the game, but it was Wimborne who were in the ascendancy.
Cobham’s Santos was forced off in the 42nd minute with a neck injury and Mike Trim picked up a sin bin two minutes before the break, with the visitors lucky to be going into halftime at 0-0.
But it was Cobham that made the faster start in the second half, despite being down to 10 men for the first eight minutes of the half.
A Tadgh Case cross found Charlie Shears at the far post and he should have scored, but his effort was bundled out for a corner.
It was Cobham’s turn to have a goal disallowed on 52 minutes, after Callum Perry scored directly from a corner, but the referee called it back as he was not ready.
Josh Buck and Josh Toop went close for the visitors, with latter coming off the bench in the 63rd minute and putting a shot just wide of the far post from 17 yards in his first involvement.
Buck then hit the bar on 68 minutes with a clipped effort from 20 yards out beating the keeper but staying out and it was safely cleared.
Just a minute later and Case should have scored from a free header six yards out, but it went over the bar.
Cobham were left to rue their missed chances though, as skipper Ellis George failed to clear his lines on 73 minutes and the ball fell to Charlie Middleton, who clipped the ball into the far corner.
The hosts’ lead gave them renewed energy and they then struck the crossbar with a free kick in the 78th minute.
Cobham went close through Scott Walters on 87 minutes but it was too little too late and Wimborne went into the hat for the next round.
