A DAY of great entertainment with some quality players on display, but also a truly fantastic occasion for an incredible man named Dan Cann.
At the age of 38, Dan was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease early last month.
An estimated 1500 were in attendance for a match between Hamworthy United Legends and Poole Town Legends with the Dolphins running out as 5-2 winners on the day.
Both sides had some impressive names on their ranks, the likes of Steve Fletcher and Sean Wright wearing the shirt of Hamworthy.
The Poole side also had some great players with Micky Hubbard and Taffy Richardson wearing the red and white of Poole once again.
Not to mention, a management team of Harry Redknapp and Tom Killick for Poole whilst the Hammers were managed by a duo of Alex Pike and Brendon King.
The game got underway in the beautiful Dorset sunshine with both sides testing each other out early on.
Will Fletcher had the first chance of the game for the Hammers, but his shot was well saved.
The Poole Legends took the lead on the 26th minute mark after a great strike from Keith Emmerson found its way into the bottom corner.
Micky Hubbard had a great chance to double Poole’s lead just before the break, but his effort was stopped by a great save from the Hammers keeper Shane Murphy.
The second half got underway with a similar theme to the first as the Dolphins were on top in search of a second goal.
The Dolphins did double their lead on the 55th minute through ex-Dolphin Will Spetch, who found himself in an unnatural striker position, and lobbed the goalkeeper with a brilliant finish.
Poole Town captain Jamie Whisken made it 3-0 on the 68th minute as he comfortably slotted it past the goalkeeper.
The Dolphins Legends side went on to score two more through Toby Holmes and Micky Hubbard to ensure the game was out of sight.
Hamworthy United Legends fought back and did score two including a great finish from Sean Wright and a looping header from Sam Lanahan but it was too little too late.
The full-time whistle went with Poole Town Legends winning the game 5-2 but on occasions like this the result is never as important as the day itself.
Thank you to everyone who attended and has played their part in supporting a fantastic cause for Dan Cann who needs and deserves everyone’s love during this tough time for him and his family.
Joint-manager Tom Killick said: “It’s great to see so many people here, it’s obviously about raising as much money as possible but hopefully it’s also an enjoyable day for Dan with so many people here that care so much about him.”
