TWO American football teams have merged to create a joined-up academy for the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole conurbation.

Poole Dolphins and Bournemouth Bobcats have undergone a restructuring and have come up with a five-year plan to compete at the highest level.

The plan will see them aim to professionalise the organisations, develop flag football and a women’s programme, engage with the community and develop partnerships with businesses and organisations.

The Dolphins were established in 2008 for boys and girls aged 13 to 16, and have since expanded, adding an under-19s team, with more than 40 players currently registered.

The Bobcats were the premier south coast football team between 1986 and 1991, winning the Budweiser Premier Bowl in 1987, before the Bournemouth Buccaneers took over and won the National Bowl in 1993.

The reformed Bobcats side was established in 2009 and has been competing in the national league since 2011.

They were promoted to Division One in 2019.

Bournemouth Bobcats general manager, Luke Clark, said: “This is a really exciting time for our organisation.

“Not only are we forming a partnership with the Poole Dolphins, we are also working towards a five year plan to establish us as one of the premier teams on the South Coast.

“Our vision is to ensure anyone can play American Football from the age of 13 without barriers.”

Head of the Poole Dolphins, Neil Loveless, added: “The Poole Dolphins are delighted to announce that they will be partnering with Bournemouth Bobcats.

“Joining with the Bobcats strengthens the Dolphins as a club and creates a complete pathway from youth and junior to senior football.”

The Dolphins will be holding taster sessions for the 2025 season on September 22 and October 6 at Redhill Park between 9.30am and 11.30am.

All 13- to 19-year-olds are welcome, with no experience necessary.
