A BOURNEMOUTH boxer missed out on the National Development Championship title after a close-run final, losing on a split decision.
Sam Carr, who represents CNC Christchurch Amateur Boxing Club, reached the final at Kettering Sports Arena last weekend.
He dominated the semi-final in the 80kg category against Widnes ABC’s Tom Whitely on Saturday, October 19, with Whitely given a standing count in the third round.
The judges unanimously voted in Carr’s favour to put him through to the final to be held on Sunday, October 20.
In the final, against Halliwell ABC’s Samuel Akinsete, both boxers performed outstandingly in a close contest.
But in the end, the judges gave a three-two split decision in favour of Akinsete.
Carr said: “It’s been an amazing experience boxing in the National Development Championships, and I’d like to thank my team, including Joe Hayes, John Woods, and Jason Barker for giving me all of their support and training.
“Without them I wouldn’t have reached the final in the National Development Championships. Now I’m looking forward to my next boxing challenge.”
Hayes, who is one of the head trainers at CNC Christchurch ABC, said: “Sam fought seven fights in five weeks, winning six of them, which is an amazing feat.
“It was a massive achievement for Sam to secure his place in the final of these prestigious boxing Championships.
“Unfortunately, the decision in the final contest didn’t go our way, and we take nothing away from Sam’s opponent as the final was a contest worthy of two winners.
“Sam has a great future ahead of him, and we are excited to be a part of his boxing journey.
“And if there are any young people who wish to join us at CNC Christchurch ABC, they are very welcome.”
