THE Wessex Volleyball men's team gained another three sets to nil win in the National League against Wiltshire Mavericks, to strengthen their position towards the top of the table.
Although the end result was clearcut, Wiltshire stayed in the fight for much of the match and Wessex had to fight hard for their win.
Wessex opened up an early lead in the first set, building to 23-19 late in the set. However, some ragged serve receive and missed serves enabled Wiltshire to draw level at 24 all.
The return of Seb Smith and Luke Clayton onto court enabled Wessex to close out the set 26-24.
Wiltshire took an early 7-2 lead in the second set, but a Wessex timeout settled them and they gained momentum.
Improved passing enabled Michael Wahl to utilise his middle hitters, Seb Smith and Marcos Perez Martin, more and then provide one on one opportunities to his outside hitters, Sam Reid and Jaden Malpas.
As a result, Wessex moved ahead and won the set 25-20.
By now, Wessex were dominant and cruised through the third set, winning it by 25-14 and the match 3-0.
Next Saturday, Wessex face a return match with Wiltshire Mavericks, but this time in the National Shield and at their home venue.
